A Partnership Built on Service

In Siler City, the Salvation Army of Chatham serves its county in various ways. Their mission statement is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and offer hope to anyone who comes to them. Their goal is to try to give hope to everyone! They help with emergency financial aid and housing crises, coach people through financial management, and give meals to locals in need. When helping with emergency financial assistance, for example, if someone needs help paying a bill, the Salvation Army will help pay a bill for them every 24 months, depending on the situation. Another way the Salvation Army helps their community is when housing crises occur. The Salvation Army helps people in unsafe homes or homes where fires have occurred when they need to get out of their homes. After and during COVID-19, especially, people lost their jobs and couldn’t get back on their feet. The Salvation Army offered case management to those who needed help by coaching them through their finances.

Most importantly, the Salvation Army helps give food to the county. The Salvation Army has partnered with the Chatham Alliance to help expand its resources to the western part of the county. With the help of the Chatham Alliance, The Salvation Army began distributing approximately 30 servings of food weekly in Siler City. Currently, the Salvation Army partners directly with the Chatham Alliance to come to Siler City, bring meals and distribute them to whoever needs them. During this time of the month, about 300–400 servings are given to locals in need. Recently, the Salvation Army has also started a partnership with Mountain Cares to get chicken to cook as a hot meal during something called Simple Suppers. During Simple Suppers, once a month a chef comes and cooks the chicken into meals, and then the meals are served out of a cantine truck. When the Salvation Army raises money, all of the money raised in Chatham County stays in Chatham County and helps directly with keeping the office open, paying staff, or helping people with financial assistance.

Lastly, the Salvation Army has a grocery store inside of County Collectibles, located in Siler City. Their booth is the only booth that sells food, and all the food they sell is food that is rejected, due to denting in the packaging, by grocery stores and is given to them for free to sell at downgraded prices.

The Salvation Army continues to do great things for the community of Chatham County, and through donating and volunteering at the Salvation Army, you can help make a greater impact on people in need.
