Our Story

Part of the Chatham Alliance team at one of the community kitchens where meals are cooked for Chatham neighbors.

In June of 2021, several Chatham County churches gathered to discuss the idea of partnering to serve and support the community by providing nutritional assistance and compassion. The premise was that together we could offer a sustainable service to the community in the form of a free, pre-cooked, vacuum packed and frozen entree on a weekly basis.

After our initial meeting, three churches, St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Pittsboro Presbyterian Church and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, agreed to fund a pilot effort that would extend through the end of 2021 in order to determine the impact such a service would make. The partnership was named "Alliance Serving Chatham County", with the hope and desire to extend the collaboration into other service opportunities together in the future. The food ministry was named "Chatham Chuckwagon". The program was initially funded by the participating churches. Since that first meeting, the partnership has grown to include Pittsboro United Methodist Church and Chapel In The Pines Presbyterian Church and receives tremendous amounts of support from Mountaire Farms of North Carolina, Carolina Brewery & Grill, Panera Bread and countless members of the community.

Freezing the entrees helps to ensure food safety, minimal storage and easy preparation. Saint Bartholomew’s Church was chosen as the initial distribution point because the location is well known to the community, and it also provided a location where folks could drive by and pick up their meals without needing to leave their cars at a time when the COVID-19 concerns were still prominent.

Our initial goal was to serve 150-200 servings per week. By December of 2021 we reached 300 servings in a week and over 4200 servings total, which prompted the group to consider becoming a 501(c)3. Becoming a non-profit would assist in furthering our goals of serving more of Chatham County. After just over one year, having served over 10,000 meals, and with the desire to expand the mission, the Alliance Serving Chatham County formally incorporated as a North Carolina nonprofit!
